Virtualizing Windows under Linux

Linux = Host; Windows = Guest

Have you ever thought about running your own Windows Operating System in a virtual machine, which is for example on your daily used notebook? A Windows in Windows can then become expensive – because of the additional license. Linux is free. Why not a Linux as your ‘Host’ and your Windows as a ‘Guest’? We show you how it works…

We would like to briefly explain the advantages of virtualization with three examples:

1) You are in the office, the daily stress, a lot of coffee and you click accidentally on a suspicious e-mail attachment and everything is gone.
2) New updates and the computer does not start anymore.
3) You have a trustworthy appointment and you do not want ‘Cortana’ or any other artificial intelligence (AI) listening or even recording what is said in this confidential conversation. Lawyers for example should be aware of that. Other mobiles are of course not with you.

For the first two examples, there are so-called snapshots. Just start the latest snapshot and continue. Annoyingly, the work from the latest snapshot on is gone – but luckily not everything. In the third example, you simply set the microphone slider in Linux to zero, and the virtual machine cannot listen anymore, the Linux machine overrides the settings of the virtual machine.

There are certainly still more examples findable.

Our workshop consists of three video parts, which are best watchable with the Open Source VLC Player (Download VLC Player):

Part 1) Creation of a bootable USB stick with our Operating Systems.

Part 2) Installation of the Linux system with Virtualbox on our notebook (Host).

Part 3) Installation of the Windows Operating System in the virtual machine (Guest).
29:58 min (Download video .zip 32.0 MB) (Download Text .zip 4.0 KB)

Addendum

We have mentioned in the videos KDE Neon as a distribution, that is wrong. KDE neon is a set of software repositories for Ubuntu long-term support releases with latest 64-bit version of KDE desktop and applications. It is also the name given to a Ubuntu LTS-based Linux distribution that utilizes said repositories. (Wiki)
